Moving Guide

The Moving Checklist We Wish Every Customer Had

After a thousand-plus moves around the Tri-Cities, we can tell within five minutes whether a household prepped from a checklist. Those moves run faster, cost less, and end with calmer customers. This is the checklist we wish everyone had.

4 weeks out

  • Book your movers — good dates go first, especially month-end
  • Start decluttering: donate, sell or dump what isn’t worth moving
  • Order packing supplies (or book a packing service)
  • Give notice to your landlord if renting
  • Start a "moving folder" for quotes, receipts and important papers

2–3 weeks out

  • Pack rooms you rarely use — garage, guest room, off-season clothes
  • Label every box with room + contents, and mark FRAGILE loudly
  • File your USPS change of address
  • Schedule utility disconnects and connects (power, water, internet)
  • Update your address with bank, employer, insurance, subscriptions
  • Arrange kids and pets for moving day — both are safer elsewhere

Final week

  • Finish all packing except daily essentials
  • Pack an "open first" box: chargers, toiletries, medications, kettle, tools, toilet paper
  • Defrost and dry the fridge/freezer at least 24 hours ahead
  • Confirm details with your movers — time, addresses, parking
  • Empty and disconnect washer, dryer and any gas appliances

Moving day

Be there when the crew arrives for a quick walkthrough, point out anything fragile or staying behind, and do a final sweep of closets, cabinets and the attic before the truck leaves. At the new place, direct boxes by their room labels — future you will be grateful.
