Moving Guide

The ETSU Student Moving Guide

Every May and August, Johnson City’s streets around ETSU fill with overloaded sedans and rented trucks. We move students and their families through this rush every year — here’s what actually works.

Move-in and move-out weeks

Campus housing moves are all about timing: arrive early in the day, expect queues for elevators and carts, and don’t bring more than the room holds. For move-out, book any help you need weeks ahead — the last weekend of the semester is the busiest moving weekend of the year in this town.

Apartment moves around town

Most student moves around Johnson City — Buccaneer Ridge to a Walnut Street apartment, or between complexes — fit in a two-person crew’s minimum booking. Split between roommates, professional movers often cost about the same as a truck rental plus fuel, deposits and a wasted Saturday.

  • Book mid-week if you can — cheaper and calmer than weekends
  • Reserve your complex’s elevator or loading zone if it has one
  • Flatten and reuse boxes between roommates
  • Renting a truck anyway? We load and unload it by the hour

Summer storage

Going home for summer but staying next year? Short-term storage between leases beats hauling everything home and back. We collect, store and redeliver when your new lease starts — one booking, no storage-unit hunting. Split with roommates it’s surprisingly affordable.

For parents helping from afar

A lot of our student moves are booked by parents in Knoxville, Nashville or out of state. We confirm details by phone, send updates, and handle the move end to end so nobody has to take a day off work to drive a box truck across Tennessee.
